Excavation Contractors – What Are Earth Movers?

Part of the construction process is earth moving. Earth moving prepares the land, whether you’re building a residential home or a commercial establishment. Different types of moving have various jobs, including digging and removing material, pushing material, excavating material and leveling earth. There are different types of earth movers, each designed for a particular task, including excavators, bulldozers, backhoes and graders.

Earth Movers

Earth movers are machines used to move dirt around a construction site. They’re often used in the preparation phase to level ground, dig holes, or remove dirt before construction. These are all heavy machinery that comes in different sizes with different features in moving dirt in various ways as required by the job. Multiple types of earth moving equipment are often used in a large construction site for different parts of the job.

Bulldozers. The multipurpose bulldozer is designed to work on steep grades, push large amounts of material, traverse aggressive terrain and pull heavy materials. The front curved broad blade help move the dirt. They’re among the strongest and most versatile machinery used in different job sites.

Backhoes. The backhoe is used for digging. A bucket on the front of the machine scoops up material or level earth by backing over loose topsoil with the tip of the bucket placed on the ground. Useful in smaller jobs or areas with limited space.

An excavation unit on the back consists of an arm and articulating bucket. It allows the operator to dig down and extract materials. Different rear buckets can fit a backhoe for digging large holes, narrow trenches or loose gripping materials with a grappling hook, making it versatile earth moving machinery.

Excavators. This heavy machinery is used to excavate material and can move in a 360-degree radius around the machine to move the materials. Like the bulldozer, it is a dual track system giving it good traction and a stable base. It is used for digging holes and trenches, depending on the job.

The hydraulic pistons enable the arm to articulate left or right and down. Besides the bucket, several styles for different digging applications move vertically around its axis, bringing in material.

Graders. Once the bulldozer moved the earth in bulk and finished creating holes with a backhoe or excavator, it’s common for a grader to flatten the earth completely. It has a blade positioned beneath the operator, between the front and rear axles. The adjustable articulated long blade fits various jobs. The grader levels the earth in preparation for paving, structural concrete slabs or topographical reshaping. It works to move just small amounts of dirt.
